Welcome to Rome!

We are happy to announce that we are now safely in Rome! We both had uneventful flights and arrived about 40 minutes apart and managed to meet up outside the baggage claim area (among a chaotic crowd of friends, family, taxi drivers, etc). In a way it kind of reminded me of leaving the Nairobi airport with everyone crowding around you.

From the airport we found our way to the train station and figured out how to purchase 2 one-way tickets into the heart of Rome. After arriving at the down-town station we walked around in confusion trying to find bathrooms, and then trying to change money so we could pay for the bathrooms! ...all the while very desperately needing to USE the bathrooms!!! Eventually we got some money traded (at the wonderful exchange rate of $1.63US to 1Euro) and finally used the train station bathrooms (probably the creepiest bathroom experience I've ever had).

Finally leaving the train station we embarked on the next big adventure: Locating our hotel. After wandering through some scary looking streets we finally found it, right in the middle of "little India". Our "hotel room" is actually more of a one-room apartment on the 4th floor of a fairly old apartment building.

After checking in and taking a little break, we ventured out again to explore before it got dark. We had been assured that "Rome was safe, even at night, especially in this neighborhood". We also wanted to try and find some groceries to help keep our dining-out costs down. By sheer accident we stumbled upon a grocery store an bought some fruit, yogurt, sandwich fixings, & juice. Here's a picture of our very first meal in Italy.

Will post more photos later.
